Most of the Salt Lake Valley sits on dense clay soil or compacted fill; the kind of ground that sheds water instead of absorbing it. When a landscaping crew lays sod directly onto that surface without any prep, they’re setting you up for a lawn that looks fine for a few weeks and then slowly falls apart.

Here’s what happens: clay soil stays hard and compacted beneath the sod. Roots can’t penetrate it. The grass has nowhere to go. In Utah’s hot, dry summers, the shallow root system burns out fast. You’ll see yellowing, dry patches, and bare spots spreading through the lawn, usually right around the six to eight week mark. Unfortunately, there’s no fixing it at that point without tearing it out and starting over.

Water doesn’t lie: if your yard isn’t graded to move water away from your foundation and off the lawn, it will pool. That standing water can quickly kill new sod by suffocating roots, causing rot, and creating muddy dead zones that watering won’t fix. Proper grading is one of the most overlooked parts of a sod install, and one that is extremely expensive to correct later.

Laying sod without grading just hides the issue until heavy rain turns the yard into a bathtub or sends water toward your foundation. Homeowners often pay 2–3x the original install to fix drainage problems that were completely preventable with proper grading before the sod went in.That’s money and frustration that never should have happened. 

Freshly laid sod has one job in its first few weeks: push roots into the soil as fast as possible. That process requires phosphorus and most Utah soils don’t have enough of it naturally to support aggressive root development. Skip starter fertilizer at install and you’re asking your new lawn to run a race without any fuel.

The result is slow establishment, weak root depth, and sod that looks fine on the surface but hasn’t actually bonded to the soil. It’ll show up as browning edges, sections that lift or shift when walked on, and a lawn that’s vulnerable to stress during the first heat wave. By the time you notice something’s off, the critical establishment window has already closed.  This is one of the biggest contributors to sod failure and is completely preventable. 

Seams are where sod goes wrong most visibly and most commonly. When rolls are laid end to end with gaps, or stacked in a straight grid pattern, those joints become the first places to dry out, separate, and die. You end up with visible lines running through your lawn, dry brown strips between rolls, and sections that never fully knit together no matter how much you water.

Proper seam work requires patience. Rolls need to be butted tightly, not overlapping, not gapped, and staggered in a brick pattern so the ends never line up across adjacent rows. Every edge needs to be cut cleanly against borders, beds, and hardscaping. It sounds simple. In practice, a crew that’s rushing a job to finish before dark is cutting corners here every time.
